An incredibly long beaver's tail cloud feeds in from the north to a developing bell shaped updraft tower in the eastern Texas Panhandle.

BELL & BEAVER'S TAIL 2 - WHEELER, TX 5-24-2000 (v)

This close up view reveals a nicely striated flared base on the southern side of the updraft base. Notice how a secondary mid level flanged tier had formed directly above the base structure!

BELL & BEAVER'S TAIL 3 - WHEELER, TX 5-24-2000 (v)

This storm became more electrified as nightfall approached and precipitation increased, but the storm continued to maintain its beautiful structure.

ARCUS CLOUD 1 - BACA COUNTY, CO 5-25-2000 (s)

Linear storms push out an undulating arcus cloud along the storm's gust front to our west in extreme southeast Colorado.

ARCUS CLOUD 2 - BACA COUNTY, CO 5-25-2000 (s)

This is the zoomed in view of a fast approaching arcus cloud associated with a storm's gust front.

CUMULONIMBUS AT SUNSET - GREER COUNTY, OK 5-26-2000 (s)

The setting sun peaks out from just below the base of an impressive looking cumulonimbus cloud (Cb) in western Oklahoma.

PAINTED CLOUDS - NORTHERN, NE 5-28-2000 (s)

Wispy clouds are painted red by the sun just after sunset, offering somewhat of a consolation prize on a day without storms.

UNDER THE BASE - ARTHUR, NE 5-29-2000 (s)

Trying to stay in front of developing storms to our west, this dramatic multi-tiered base structure looms ahead of us along highway 61 near Arthur, NE.

DEPARTING STORMS - NE SANDHILLS 5-29-2000 (s)

The late afternoon sun enhances the beauty of a departing storm over the rolling hills of grass in the Nebraska Sandhills region.

ROLL CLOUD - FREEMONT, NE 6-25-2000 (v)

This "pseudo" roll cloud exhibited a wave like appearance in the wake of a line of severe storms that had just passed by to the east.

BLAZING SKIES - EASTERN NE 6-29-2000 (s)

As a large MCS moves southward over central Nebraska, the sun setting in the northwest sky sets a mammatus field ablaze with color.

FADING MAMMATUS - EASTERN, NE 6-29-2000 (v)

The fading light from the setting sun colors the mammatus field in shades of pink and purple.

PAINTED SUNSET - EASTERN NE 6-29-2000 (s)

The post storm skies over eastern Nebraska display vibrant colors shortly after sunset.

CIRRUS SPLASH 1 - BATHGATE, ND 6-30-2000 (v)

Storms form to my north over the international border in Canada. A pink "jumping cirrus" cloud can be seen near the middle of the photo.

CIRRUS SPLASH 2 - BATHGATE, ND 6-30-2000 (v)

This cirrus splash is also known as "jumping cirrus", and can sometimes be observed atop growing cumulus congestus or cumulonimbus clouds.

RAINSHAFT & CG 1 - MANDAN, ND 7-1-2000 (s)

Weak storms produced numerous rainshafts across central ND during the late afternoon hours of July 1st, 2000. As seen in this photo, Cloud to Ground (CG) activity can usually be found close to the rainshaft/clear air interface.

RAINSHAFTs & CGs 2 - MANDAN, ND 7-1-2000 (v)

Rainshafts and lightning increase as evening approaches.

RAINSHAFT & CG 3 - MANDAN, ND 7-1-2000 (v)

A closer view of a CG (cloud to ground) lightning bolt hugging the rainshaft/clear air interface.

LOOP LIGHTNING - BISMARCK, ND 7-1-2000 (v)

This CG (cloud to ground) lightning bolt developes a curious lightning loop near the cloud base.

SUNSET LIGHTNING - BISMARCK, ND 7-1-2000 (v)

As the setting sun begins to colorize the storm, cloud to ground lightning constantly hugs the heaviest rainshaft.

PAINTED SUNSET 1 - BISMARCK, ND 7-1-2000 (s)

Rainshafts begin to exhibit deep colors of red and orange as the sun begins to set in the late evening skies over the northern plains.

MONTANA SHELF CLOUD 5 - 7-2-2000 (v)

Here is a closer view of the "bow echo" region of the shelf cloud as it punches ahead of the main line of storms. Notice that a collar cloud has formed at the anvil level.

BOW ECHO TORNADO & CG 1 - GLASGOW, MT 7-2-2000 (v)

This rarely seen bow echo tornado was filmed south of highway 2 just west of Glasgow, MT. These tornadoes usually occur on the northern edge of of the bow (head), and are generally rain wrapped and difficult to observe.

BOW ECHO TORNADO & CG 2 - GLASGOW, MT 7-2-2000 (v)

Storm Effects On An International Scale

While much of the research provided on this site focuses mostly on US based storms, there are numerous large storms that affect the rest of the world. Many types of online masters in international relations and diplomacy programs do touch on natural disasters on a global scale. If you also want to understand how organizations and businesses deal with natural disasters, a masters degree in organizational development can touch on those topics.
